Lojas Americanas is founded in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, by four American partners: John Lee, Glen Matson, James Marshall and Batson Borger, with the slogan: “Nothing over two thousand réis".
The Company goes public, with its shares traded on the Brazilian stock market.
The Company is taken over by Banco Garantia partners.
Wal-Mart Brasil S.A. is set up, as a joint venture between Lojas Americanas S.A. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. – one of the world largest retail chains, based in the U.S.A.
Lojas Americanas management decides to sell the Company 40% stake in Wal-Mart Brasil S.A to Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in order to focus its administrative and financial resources on its own business.
Sale of the Company’s 23 supermarket stores and concentration of investments in technology and logistics.
Spin-off of real estate activities and shareholdings of São Carlos Empreendimentos from the retail business of Lojas Americanas is approved. In the same year, Americanas.com is founded.
Increase of Americanas.com capital through a new share subscription. These shares corresponded to 33% of the Company's social capital and they were traded by a total of US$ 40 million.
Lojas Americanas attains new levels of results, with a net income of R$ 57.1 million and an EBITDA margin of 6.2%.
Lojas Americanas exceeds its targets, with an EBITDA margin of 9.1% and net income of R$ 103.1 million. Americanas.com reaches its break-even point. R$ 89.2 million is paid out in dividends.
The store expansion program is speeded up, with the opening of 16 new stores. Inauguration of the Americanas Express stores – a concept of smaller stores, offering a more selected range of products. Net income reaches R$ 115.9 million and the EBITDA margin sets a new record of 11.2%.
A year of organic growth – a record number of new stores are opened: 35 in total, five in the Express store format. The new São Paulo Distribution Center is inaugurated, raising storage, transport and supply capacity by 50%.
Americanas.com sales are up 62% in relation to 2003. The consolidated EBITDA margin reaches 12.1%.
Important achievements increase added value at Lojas Americanas: the opening of 37 new stores and the acquisition of Shoptime's TV channel and e-commerce website. A joint venture is set up with Banco Itaú, creating Financeira Americanas Itaú – FAI, known as Americanas Taií. EBITDA margin is maintained at 12% and net income for the year totals R$ 176.1 million, the Company’s best result over the last years.
In 2006, we proceeded with our mission of creating value for Lojas Americanas and our stores organic expansion, opening 45 new stores and we set up a new company, B2W - Companhia Global do Varejo, the result of merger between Americanas.com and Submarino.
In January 2007, the Company announced the acquisition of BWU – the owner of BLOCKBUSTER® brand in Brazil –, which allowed Lojas Americanas to add 127 stores to its chain. Throughout the year, the Company refurbished 107 stores of BWU and opened 50 new stores.
Aiming to create value to its shareholders, following the slogan "We Always Want More", Lojas Americanas opened record number of stores, 58 distributed in 18 states of Brazil. The Comapany also refurbished and enlarged its 3 distribution centers, located in São Paulo/SP, Rio de Janeiro/RJ and Recife/PE, with the goal of improving their logistics operations and increasing their capacity.
Lojas Americanas celebrated its 80th anniversary launching "Sempre Mais Brasil" programme, a plan that foresees the opening of 400 new stores until 2013, doubling the number of stores and also the number of cities present. Also in this year, B2W began its international expansion, via Ingresso.com, which started to serve movie theaters in Mexico.
The Company opened 70 stores, reaching the maximum number of stores expected for that year (between 60 and 70 stores). B2W in turn continued its international expansion, with Ingresso.com beginning to serve movie theaters in Argentina and Chile.
Lojas Americanas carried out the greatest investment in its history, taking part of B2W’s capital increase with R$ 644 million and investing R$ 350 million in the Company with emphasis on expansion, stores refurbishment and technological updates. Besides that, 90 stores were opened, a new record for the Company.
In the third year of the program "Sempre Mais Brasil", the Company opened more 111 stores, expanding its presence in 254 cities across the country, totaling 25 states plus the Federal District. Also in this year it was announced the end of the partnership between Itaú and Lojas Americanas for supply, distribution and marketing of financial products and services.
Completion of organic expansion program "ALWAYS MORE BRAZIL - 80 YEARS IN 4", the Company operates 856 stores in 297 cities in 25 states plus the Federal District, which means that almost doubled the size of the Company only four years by successfully completing the challenge issued at the end of 2009. Additionally, to ensure greater efficiency in the distribution of goods, in October 2013 the Company opened its fourth distribution center in Uberlândia-MG. The new center will ensure greater flexibility in the supply of physical stores with the goal of providing the best customer service of Minas Gerais and the Midwest and North regions.
In the wake of the success of the program "ALWAYS MORE BRAZIL - 80 YEARS IN 4", the Company decided to launch a new challenge program "85 years in 5 - WE ARE MORE BRAZIL" with the objective to open 800 new stores and 2 new distribution centers over the next 5 years (2015 - 2019). In addition, it was created +AQUI, a prosecutor of financial product and services and it is launched Lojas Americanas new credit card. These announcements are part of the group of initiatives to better serve our clients.In this year, we also launched the first store in the city of Boa Vista-RR, consolidating our presence in all 26 states of Brazil and having a total of 952 stores in the country.
In accordance with the expansion plan lauched in 2014 "85 years in 5 - WE ARE MORE BRAZIL", the Company reached a landmark of the thousandth store, opening the first store in Paraty-RJ, city considered as National Heritage Site. Two of the Company's private labels, Leven and D'elicce, increased the assortment of products offered to customers. Also in this year, the new credit card has been issued from April and +AQUI kiosks are present in 255 stores in all regions of Brazil.
In the end of 2016, Lojas Americanas launched a new store format, located in Leme, Rio de Janeiro. With reduced size and carefully selected products geared towards food convenience.
2018 was marked by the creation of IF - Inovação e Futuro, conceived with the mission of building and leveraging disruptive initiatives within Lojas Americanas and B2W, and LET'S, the shared management platform for the logistics assets of both Companies. In an initiative led by IF, in May 2018 it was launched the Ame Digital app, the mobile business platform of Lojas Americanas and B2W. In an accelerated development, Ame accumulated 1.8MM downloads until the end of the year.
